Every painted letter on a Tiny Keepsakes puzzle step stool uses non-toxic paint, and the edges of each letter are sanded smooth so there is nothing sharp on the stool. Our personalized piggy banks are hand-painted with non-toxic, lead-free colours, and our solid maple coat racks use lead-free colours too.
That is the direct answer. The longer answer is worth reading, because "non-toxic" is a term that gets used loosely and it is reasonable to want to know what it means.
What parents are actually worried about
Three things, usually.
Lead. Banned in US household paint since 1978, but it persists in imported goods and in older second-hand furniture. This is the concern behind most of the question.
What happens when it goes in a mouth. Small children mouth things, and removable puzzle letters are exactly the size and shape that invites it.
What comes off over time. Paint that chalks or flakes with wear is a different question from paint that is safe when new.
What to look for on any children's product
Whoever you buy from, these are the things worth checking:
- Where it was made, and whether the seller says so plainly
- Whether non-toxic and lead-free are stated about the finish, not just implied by the photography
- How the edges are finished — a smooth, sanded edge is a manufacturing decision, not a coincidence
- Whether the seller will answer a direct question about materials over the phone
That last one is the most reliable test. A company that makes its own products can tell you what is on them.
What we do
Our puzzle step stools are made in the USA from birch with a furniture-grade veneer, with non-toxic paint on every letter and smooth, easy-fit edges. Solid wood and solid maple versions are made the same way.
The piggy banks are ceramic, hand-painted with non-toxic lead-free colours, 8.5 inches by 7.625 inches, with a rubber stopper in the base. The coat racks are solid maple, finished with lead-free colours, 16 to 22.5 inches wide depending on the name, with three to five pegs.
The smooth-edge point is not cosmetic
It gets mentioned as a finishing detail, but for a puzzle stool it matters more than that. The letters are handled constantly — lifted out, dropped, pushed back in, by hands that are still learning. A sanded edge is the difference between a piece that fits easily and one that a child forces.
